Born in Motala, Sweden in 1955 Alto, soprano and tenor saxophone, arranger, composer.
Already at the age of 8, Hakan began to play the piano and when he was 15 he started playing tenor saxophone and flute. One year later he was playing alto saxophone in different blues bands in Motala and baritone sax with Motala Big Band.
In 1972 he moved to Malmo in order to study at the music high school there, where his teacher was Helge Albin, saxophonist and arranger with Tolvan Big Band. He also began playing soprano saxophone and worked with Raj Montana Band and Dan Hylander. In 1977 he began attending the Malmo College of Music and he began to compose regularly. He became a member of the Gothenburg group "Waves" led by the legendary drummer Conny Sjöqvist.
In 1978 Hakan joined trombonist Eje Thelin's group, which made, amongst others, a sensational appearance at the Jazz Jamboree festival in Warsaw1979 and also at the prestigious jazz festival in Molde , Norway 1980. Hakan also took part in the group's album "Bits and Pieces
In 1979 he established the quartet "Equinox" together with saxophonist Tomas Franck. Other groups in which Hakan played at this time were a quartet with saxophonist Helge Albin, guitarist Ewan Svensson's group "Albatross" and guitarist Jan Tolf's "Resa". He also participated in the Swedish Radio Jazz Group's collaboration with American saxophonist Jimmy Heath.
In 1984 "Equinox" was chosen to record the "Jazz in Sweden" album of that year. Hakan also participated in a recording with blues artist Peps Person. Hakan then decided to move to Stockholm where he began playing with Bernt Rosengren's Big Band as well as the Stockholm Jazz Orchestra and Mikael Raberg's Big Band. In addition he played with Tolvan Big Band, which performed concerts together with guest soprano saxophonist Dave Liebman. He also began with Gustavo Bergalli's Quintet, which was to later tour in Argentina, Paraguay, Chile and Uruguay. The group recorded an album in Buenos Aires.
Hakan took part in the Swedish Radio Jazz Group's project "Chordeography", with music written by trumpeter Ulf Adaker, and while playing with the Stockholm Jazz Orchestra he worked with American guests Bob Mintzer and Bob Brookmeyer. Hakan was one of the participants in the composer-project Comp-87 where his music was played by amongst others Eje Thelin, pianist Bobo Stenson and bassist Palle Danielsson.
In 1988 Hakan formed the group "In and Out", in which pianist Esbjorn Svensson and bassist Christian Spering were members. He recorded with Bob Brookmeyer and the Stockholm Jazz Orchestra an album of Brookmeyer's compositions. "Equinox" toured in Canada and "In and Out" played for three weeks in Athens.
The group's first CD under its own name, "Dark Light", was recorded in 1990. Hakan toured with the Swedish Radio Jazz Group in which trumpeter Kenny Wheeler was the guest soloist. There was to be more big band work when Hakan recorded an album with Mikael Raberg's Big Band in which Adam Nussbaum was guest drummer. The album received a "Grammis" award, as did another album that Hakan recorded with Peps Persson, "Spela for livet".
In 1993 Hakan began playing with Norrbotten Big Band in Lulea, led by Orjan Fahlstrom. Guest artists with the band included trumpeter Bobby Shew and guitarist Philip Catherine followed by a project with Maria Schneider and Toots Thielemans.
In 1994 Hakan's group "In and Out" recorded their second album "Celestial Nights" and appeared at the Skeppsholmsfestival in Stockholm. The Norrbotten Big Band toured in Spain with Maria Schneider and Toots Thielemans, and "In and Out" toured with American pianist Joey Calderazzo
1995 was an intensive year for Hakan. He recorded an album with Jan Wallgren, "Raga, Bebop and Anything" and his own project with trombonist Nils Landgren and singer Viktoria Tolstoy broke the public attendance record at Jazzclub Fasching in Stockholm. He formed a group with American musicians, trumpeter Tim Hagans, pianist Marc Copland and drummer Jeff Hirshfield and toured Sweden and Norway as well as recording the album "Still Dreaming".
The group "Blues Transfusion" was formed in which Hakan played together with, amongst others, organist Pierre Svard and guitarist Max Schultz.
In 1996 Hakan wrote arrangements for a concert project with American singer Carmen Lundy and the Norrbotten Big Band
In 1997 Hakan toured often with both Blues Transfusion and the Norrbotten Big Band, and for a tour with Viktoria Tolstoy he was responsible for all the big band arrangements. He also toured with Tim Hagans and Jazz Unit. He was to meet the legendary pianist McCoy Tyner and his trio in a project together with the Swedish Radio Jazz Group.
In 1998 Hakan put together his own big band featuring such outstanding Swedish musicians as alto saxophonist Johan Horlen, trombonist Bertil Strandberg, trumpeters Magnus Broo and Anders Bergcrantz as well as Viktoria Tolstoy. He took part in Festival appearances with Peps Persson and "Blues Transfusion".
In 2000 Hakan started the group "Birdsongs" together with alto saxophonist Johan Horlen. The band celebrates the music of Charlie Parker. Hakan was one of the soloists on a CD by Norrbotten Big Band and Tim Hagans, "Future Miles", which was released by the German record company ACT.
In 2001 Hakan took part in guitarist Ulf Wakenius"' Groove Factor" and wrote arrangements for a collaboration between Norrbotten Big Band and trombonist Conrad Herwig.
In 2002 Hakan received a grant from Swedish SKAP and began playing in pianist/composer Nils Lindberg's Saxes Galore.
2003 he toured with Viktoria Tolstoy and at the Skeppsholmen Festival of that year he was a member of the group "Sixtus" that featured guest pianist Herbie Hancock..
In 2004 in a tour with Norrbotten Big Band he played with guest saxophonist Chris Potter. He formed his former quartet with pianist Jacob Karlzon, bassist Palle Danielsson and drummer Bengt Stark. He toured in Norway with the Swedish-Norwegian quartet SWAP.
In 2005 Hakan was commissioned to record a "Composer Portrait" album for the Phono Suecia label where he presented his compositions and arrangements performed by big band and a string ensemble together with the rhythm section from his quartet."New Places" is the name of this CD.
"Birdsongs" embarked on an extensive tour for Swedish Rikskonserter. Jazz clubs around the country hailed the concerts given by that group as the finest of the year. As a member of Norrbotten Big Band, Hakan played for a project with saxophonist Joe Lovano. This was followed by another featuring clarinetist Putte Wickman and singer Linda Pettersson and this combination also performed at the Swedish Jazz Celebration 2005 in Malmo.
The year 2006 began with a long tour in which Norrbotten Big Band collaborated with the soul group "Blacknuss".A recording was made with some arrangements from Håkan´s pen. Saxophonist Bernt Rosengren was the next guest with the band with music arranged by drummer Bengt Stark.
In 2007 Håkan played a lot with Ulf Wakenius group Groove Factor.They recorded ”Fithy McNasty” released on Stunt Records.
In 2008 Håkan invited pianist Joey Calderazzo again for tour in Sweden together with bass player Martin Sjöstedt and drummer Daniel Fredriksson.
A recording was also made during that week in February 2008.
Håkan also toured with NBB/Maria Schneider and later that year with bassist and composer Rufus Reid.Håkan also did a big band project with the students at the Royal Academy of Music in Stockholm.
In Feb 2009 Håkan took his music and went to his native town and fronted Motala Big Band on a concert.
In April,the same year, Joey Calderazzo toured again with Håkan´s quartet.
In October that year he met and played with Carla Bley and Steve Swallow in a big band project with Norrbotten Big Band.
In 2010 Håkan formed his big band New Places Orchestra named after the CD New Places.
The band did a series of four concerts in the spring at jazz club Fasching/Stockholm.
Every concert had three guest artists.There were artists like Rigmor Gustafsson,Viktoria Tolstoy,Ulf Wakenius,Meja,LaGaylia Frazer,Movits among others.
The grand finale was at Stockholm Jazz festival that summer.
This year Håkan had the pleasure to meet and play with legend Phil Woods who really appreciated Håkan´s playing both as a soloist and first alto player.
2011 Norrbotten Big Band did a project with singer Dee Dee Bridgewater.
A real jazz diva with an explosive apperance on stage.Håkan led the band and did most of the arrangements.In December that year Håkan was invited to lead a production with the WDR Big Band. In Cologne, Germany. All the arrangments was from Håkan´s pen and was also featured soloist together with the Finnish vibe player Severy Pyysalo.
2012 was an exiting and busy year for Håkan.He was leading Norrboten Big Band in a lot of projects with different guest artists as French drummer Anne Paceo,Swedish sing and song writer Rebecka Törnqvist,Made in Sweden with singer Tommy Körberg and guitarist Jojje Wadenius.But his two ”heart projects” was the one with percussionist Marilyn Mazur and the one with Joey Calderazzo and Jeff ”Tain” Watts.For Marilyn Mazur, Håkan had written a suite called ”Episodes from the future and the past”.Which also is the title on his latest CD.Released in June 2014 by Art of Life Records.
The big band project with Calderazzo and Tain was preceeded by a quartet tour with bassist Martin Sjöstedt as the fourth member.
Håkan also got financial support by Musikverket to do three projects with New Places Orchestra and three Swedish composer´s ..Cecilia Persson,Anna-Lena Laurin and Monica Dominique.
In 2013 Håkan did a project with Swedish singer and rock star Ebbot Lundberg.
Håkan wrote, together with producer/guitar player Johan Lindström, 14 arrangemnets for the production which was a great success.
Later that year he toured with NBB/Mikael Rickfors to which he also wrote some nice arrangements.
This year started with two projects with Visby Storband.In the first project Håkan led the band and also brought some of his music.The second project was fronted by Swedish soul man Eric Gadd.
In February Håkan was asked to contribute with a composition to a project which was a tribute to the legendary Swedish trumpet player Jan Allan,celebrating his 80th birthday.The project was recorded and will be released in November 2014.
I June the CD "Episodes from the Future and the Past" was released on Art of Life Records.
It got some really good reviews.
A very exiting project during 2014 was the European Tour with Håkan´s quartet featuring Joey Calderazzo and Jeff ”Tain” Watts.
